Background: Members of the UTB/TSC Grupo Folklorico Tizatlan will join with Charro Days, Inc. to bring the fiesta to hundreds of residents who live in Brownsville’s nursing homes.

The college students, together with El Mariachi Mexico Lindo, will be on hand to dance with some of the patients bringing a little bit of Charro Days to those who otherwise can not make it out to the celebration.

Taking mariachis to residents of the nursing homes in Brownsville is a Charro Days tradition that began more than 20 years ago by Charro Days Incorporated.

Many residents at the nursing homes get into the spirit of the annual fiesta by wearing traditional Mexican dresses to welcome the serenading mariachis. As soon as they hear the music, some of the residents want to get out of their wheelchairs and start dancing and that’s when the students will step in.

What: Baile del Sol to Kickoff 72nd Charro Days Fiesta

Background: The 72nd annual Charro Days Fiesta begins with Baile del Sol, the first event of the weeklong festivities, scheduled for noon Sunday, Feb. 22 in front of the headquarters of Charro Days Inc., 455 E. Elizabeth St., Brownsville, Texas.

The traditional grito will officially kick off the fiesta at 3 p.m. The presidents of Charro Days, Sombrero Festival, the Mr. Amigo Association and Fiestas Mexicanas will belt out the grito continuing a tradition that started in 1938

Now, in its 11th year, Baile del Sol will feature school-age and college students dancing traditional Mexican dances and dressed in native costumes. There will also be food, music and a street dance. At 4:30 p.m., men and women will battle out the flour tortilla eating contest. The tortillas are stuffed with beans. In 2003, the record time of 4 minutes and 19 seconds was set. That time still stands. Admission is free.

Longoria Elementary students Mario Davila Jr. and Alina Gutierrez didn’t fret once after autographing several dozen of this year’s Official Charro Days Fiesta Poster.

The 2009 Official Charro Days Fiesta Poster was unveiled today as a packed audience at the event’s downtown headquarters waited in anticipation.

The poster, depicting Davila and Gutierrez dancing, drew applause as its artist, Don Breeden, and sponsors Keppel Amfels representatives, revealed it to the crowd. The dance portrayed, “La Danza de los Conceros”, is a modern, mystic, folk dance of Central Mexico based on the cultural legacy of the “Aztecs.”

Breeden has illustrated 10 of the 11 posters in the Charro Days poster series.

In 1991, the Brownsville Convention and Visitors Bureau, Inc. (BCVB) began the tradition of creating a Charro Days poster to commemorate the event. In 2004, Charro Days, Inc. partnered with the BCVB, and this year, Keppel AmFELS joined as the sponsor of the poster.

Free posters, while they last, remain available at the Charro Days Headquarters, 455 E. Elizabeth St., and the BCVB Visitors’ Center, 650 Ruben M. Torres Blvd. Businesses are being encouraged to display the poster.

For the first time this year, a Charro Days event was viewable live on the Internet. And, event organizers have organized a volunteer “new media” team to take promotion of the event to another level.

“With the age of technology, we wanted to bring both tradition and technology together,” said Charro Days Publicity Chairman Letty Fernandez. “We hope to attract a broader demographic.”

Also new this year is a Charro Days Fiesta blog where up-to-date information and photos are provided on the event and constructive input is encouraged. The blog address is www.charrodays.blogspot.com.

The 72nd Charro Days Fiesta kicks off Feb. 22 and continues through March 1.

Charro Days Fiesta Organizers Utilize New Media

Organizers for Charro Days Fiesta are prepping for the upcoming festivities that begin Feb. 22 and run through March 1. With the event marking its 72nd year, Publicity Committee Chairman Letty Fernandez organized a "new media" team to bring promotion of the event to a new level.

The use of new media, consisting of Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, Webcasts and YouTube, aims to bring a renewed energy to Charro Days Fiesta in an effort to entice participation from a broader demographic. This is key in keeping Brownsville's much-loved traditions alive.
